Each and every one of us is born with an innate ability to turn inwards and turn towards ourselves for the answers and guidance that we seek in our lives. We call this innate ability intuition.
We go through our lives and somehow our intuition gets clouded over.
When we were young, adults might have told us that we don't really know what we're talking about; there is no real way that we could feel the feelings of the Earth, or that the rock we hold in our hand really doesn't have a message for us, it's just a rock. They might even have told us that we don't actually see people or Angels around us, and they called them our imaginary friends instead.
The adults in our lives didn't mean to harm us, or dim our light by doing so. They had most likelyforgotten their own innate ability to be in touch with their intuitive nature. And thus, they told us our experience couldn't possibly be real either.
So, overtime you started to lose touch with your own inner knowing as well.
Yet, it is always there, always inside of you, and always ready and willing and able to be accessed by you, with your permission.
You might even have experiences of this already in your life. Instances in which you just knew that something was going to happen, or you just had a feeling that someone was about to reach out to you. Or someone might say something to you and you feel goosebumps, or truth bumps, rising up on your skin (the “chills”).
These are all experiences of intuition.
Just like when the clouds cover the sun and yet the sun finds its way to peek through, that's what these experiences are. Your intuition is there, just like the sun, trying to peek through the clouds, to let you know it's there.
Getting back in touch with their intuition is a fairly easy task. We do this by simply getting quiet with ourselves. By allowing our minds to settle, and allowing any internal knowing to rise up to the surface.
The challenge with most of us, is that we don't take the time to sit and get quiet with ourselves, to get back into relationship with this sun that has become obscured by the clouds. And when that happens, we start to believe the sun isn't there. Or that our intuition doesn't really exist, or that we "don't have that ability."
The truth is, we all have that ability. We have all been given this gift. It is our innate inheritance.
Some simple ways you can start to cultivate your intuition are:
- Start a meditation practice. It doesn’t have to be some long drawn out hour long thing where you sit on the floor, legs crossed, and chanting things. No, no. It can be as simple as taking 5 minutes to center and ground yourself and shut out the noise of the world. When we quiet out the noise of the world, that's how we can start to listen to our own inner knowing. It's often been said (and has been my experience too) that the voice of our intuition is the small, still voice, not the loud one. We have to get quiet enough to listen to the still, small voice within.
- Take pause and notice what your body is telling you. When you find yourself in a situation where you aren’t sure what to do, take a moment to pause, take a few deep breaths, get grounded, and notice what your body has to say. I bet you will notice a tightening or a tension, a resistance of sorts, to things that don’t feel right, and an excitement or an expansion when something does feel right for you. Give it a try. See what you notice.
- Start an automatic writing practice. This means, clear your mind, get grounded, ask Spirit, God/Goddess, your Higher Self, a question, and then, allow the answer to flow through your pen or pencil onto the paper. For this exercise, I highly recommend going analog and actually using a pen or pencil and paper, to do the writing. There’s science that shows this does something with our brain-body connection.
So there you have it. Three simple and easy ways to start leaning in an cultivating a deeper relationship with your own internal knowing. Have lots of fun as you start deepening your relationship with this sacred part of you! :)
